Farm stay in Appiano: history and philosophy of our family

Steinegger: Roots, values & people who care

Here, history meets the present — without big words, but with plenty of heart. Steinegger has remained authentic over the centuries: shaped by work, joy and the people who bring it to life.

1669–1696
Since the 17th century, the farm — then known as “Pollinhof” — has been run by the Steinegger family, who are believed to have come to Appiano from Switzerland.

1850–1898
Thanks to its location along the old Mendel road and later the Überetsch railway, the farm became a popular stopping place for traders, travellers and visitors from the town.

1950–1977
With hard work and new ideas, Josefine and Mathias Eisenstecken guided the farm through challenging times; their son Michael built the outdoor pool, guesthouse and indoor pool — turning Steinegger into a hotel with heart.

Verena and Michael take over, bringing in fresh ideas and running the business with the same warmth as the generations before them. Today, Steinegger stands for what has always defined it: groundedness, family unity and genuine hospitality — for generations.

With heart, humour and common sense

At Steinegger, there’s a bit of family everywhere — in the kitchen, the garden, at reception and sometimes even on the bocce court. Everyone lends a hand in their own way — warm, genuine and with a good dose of common sense.

Verena –
the one who listens

Verena is host, hiking guide and gardener at heart. She knows every path around Appiano, every scent in the garden, and always has a sincere smile for her guests. Between reception desk, flower bed and mountain trail, she’s wherever people are meant to feel good — right in the middle of it all.

Michi –
heart, kitchen & craftsmanship

Michi is a chef, winemaker and tinkerer by conviction. He loves trying out new things — whether fermenting, making vinegar or producing wine. And when he’s not cooking, he’s probably talking about good food, rock music — or both at the same time..

Grandpa Michl –
a true Steinegger institution

Born in 1936, Grandpa Michl is simply part of the place.
He enjoys a round of cards, follows every tennis match and appreciates a good conversation — preferably with a glass of wine and plenty of time.
Anyone who meets him immediately senses how much history lives within these walls.

The next generation

The three children bring life into the house — sometimes with a motorbike helmet, sometimes with a make-up brush, sometimes simply with their good spirits. They play, splash, laugh and make sure it never gets too quiet at Steinegger. And honestly: that’s exactly what makes it feel so alive up here.

Our way of being hosts

We believe that true luxury lies in simplicity — in the scent of herbs from the garden, the Steinegger panorama, a glass of wine in the evening. Much of what ends up on your plate grows right here on the farm: harvested, preserved and refined with whatever the season has to offer. And if you feel like it, you’re welcome to join in — pick a fig straight from the tree or play a round of bocce. Because at Steinegger, it’s never about absolute perfection — it’s about feeling at ease, together, in the heart of nature.
